What Is a Sports Scholarship?

One of the most important investments you’ll ever make is in your education. Unfortunately, a college education doesn’t come cheap and a lot of people can’t afford to pay for college. Because of the expensive college fees, many students are working hard in their academics to gain a college scholarship. While those that are athletically inclined are giving their all to sports so scouts who will offer them an American sports scholarship can discover them.

So, if you dream is to get a college education and a college degree but you don’t have enough money, then you should work hard academically or in your game (either on the field, court or pool).

American sports scholarships or athletic scholarships are offered to high school athletes who perform excellently in some type of sport such as football, basketball, soccer, baseball, wrestling, or swimming. The scholarship may be a partial or a full scholarship. Full scholarships cover everything from books, tuition, room and board, and even food. Partial scholarships, while still a big saving, usually covers a portion of what the full scholarship covers such as partial tuition, or books and food.

The competition for American sports scholarships in most high schools is fierce. If you’re one of the “star athletes” in your school, that will always help. However, a few more qualifications must be met before you can completely secure a sports scholarship. Your Standardised Test and Academic grade scores are also important. If you want to be considered for a scholarship, you’ll need to have a Grade Point Average of at least 2.5, an ACT score of 17 minimum or a combined SAT score of 800. With a bit of preparation and planning from the early years of your high school, you can easily meet these requirements. This will then give you a better opportunity to concentrate on improving your athletic prowess.

Some of the requirements for sports scholarships include:

1. Age
If you wish to play a sport at college level, you must be between 18 and 24 years of age. It is important to remember that most scholarships are awarded during undergraduate studies leading to a bachelor’s degree. The best time to apply for a sports sponsorship would right after your high school graduation. You must also be classed as an ‘amateur’ athlete and not participated in professional sports.

2. Admission
Before you are eligible for a college sports scholarship, you must have secured admission into the college or university. This means that you should have successfully completed high school. Knowledge of various proficiency test requirements is essential to clear the admission process. Student-athletes with higher Grade Point Average (GPA) in high school graduation have a greater the chance of gaining admission and an increase in scholarship amounts.

Since potential athletes are sourced several months before the onset of the official season, it is of important that you apply to the college or university early on through accredited agencies that can vet your application and provide invaluable assistance in the admission process.

An agency like RecruitMeUSA can create a portfolio of your achievements, recommendations from guidance counsellors and coaches, and of course a record of your grades and test scores as well as utilising a scouting network to help promote you. Based on the strength of your achievements, you’ll be able to catch the eye of one of the college coaches and you’ll be offered a scholarship. There’s a good chance that it’ll be a partial scholarship, but this way you’ll be able to get your foot in the door.
